On November 23, 1963 the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) aired the first episode of Dr.Who, a low-budget series about the adventures of a time traveller, or "Timelord". The show went on to become the longest running science fiction series in history, spanning 26 seasons and several hundred episodes until its untimely demise in 1989.
Since then, the show has been entrenched in pop culture as a science fiction cult classic. The Dr.Who saga proliferated in countless novels, audio dramas and most recently in BBCi streamed webcasts.
In 1996, I was fortunate enough to be cast as Chang Lee, a lead character in the Fox/BBC/Universal co-production of the Dr.Who TV Movie: The Enemy Within. The revival featured a bigger budget and more modern special effects. Unfortunately, the show did not pick up for series. However, what I didn't know then was that I had unwittingly stepped into the world of Dr.Who fandom.
My first sci-fi convention appearance was at a small gathering of Dr.Who enthusiasts in Toronto, Canada back in 1996. Since then, I've been invited all over the U.S. and England as a guest of these strange and wonderful events, and each have their own characteristics that make them all unique experiences.
Most recently, Tenth Planet, the foremost supplier of Dr.Who memorabilia in England, sponsored a tour of several events all over the UK. While I was there, I had the chance to work on some audio dramas for Big Finish Productions, the official producer of Dr.Who audio dramas for the BBC. One of them, called "Real Time" was webcast on the BBCi website in 2002.
