Recent Projects, acting & otherwise
2006
My daughter was born January 5th, 2006! Her name is Aija and she weighed 6 lbs. 8 oz. Wow...never been so tired and elated at the same time!
2005
Finished "Butterflies" except for the last sound edit. Got into the Edmonton International Film Festival. Started a renovation company. Still working in film, but needed a supplement to help support the new family on the way!!
Fall 2004
Lots happening. I mean, LOTS. Just finished shooting "Butterflies" - we had a great crew, a great time, and I think it's going to be a great little movie by the end of it. Now it's all just post-production work. I also started a new year at Ryerson, I'm very excited to be taking the Cinematography class. I'm working a lot on the crew side of things. I was the 1st AD on a short called "Gyro for Hire". I was also Production Coordinator recently on an educational show for children called "The Peace Tree", which may air on CBC before Christmas.
Spring/Summer 2004
I completed my 1st year studies at Ryerson. Learned a lot. I'm going to concentrate on getting some work over the summer while school's out. I'm also directing and producing a short film later this year called "Butterflies".
Winter 2003/04
I just started my first university course: the Film Studies certificate program at Ryerson University here in Toronto. It's a blast! This summer I start Motion Picture Production I, which basically involves me roaming around with a 16mm camera shooting different assignments. When I come out of this course (there's 2nd and 3rd year) hopefully I'll have a descent little reel put together of stuff shot on 16.
Also, I recently took part in Fu-GEN theatre company's Playwright's Kitchen, a festival reading of new plays. There were six original works written by Asian Canadians, two of which I read for. The night was a sold out success!
In a related story, the Green Banana, a Humber College publication, recently interviewed me about being an ethnic theatre artist in Toronto. Click here for the transcript.
Fall 2003
I recently went to my first professional musical theatre audition...and got the part!! It's the role of Daniel (and others) in "Jacob Two Two Meets the Hooded Fang", playing at the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People. It's based on the popular children's book by Canadian literary icon Mordecai Richler, who has actually lived in England for quite a while, but I say he's Canadian cause he's originally from Montreal. The show opens Nov.1 and runs until the first week of January, 2004. Details, showtimes, and tickets are available here.My thanks go out to Richard Lee from fu-Gen for selflessly giving me the heads up on the audition, and the LKTYP for being imaginative enough to cross-cast the role (Daniel is Jacob's brother, but in the theatre we really don't have to be the same ethnic background, now do we?) Oh the times they are a' changin...?
Summer 2003
Most recently, I've taken on the duties of Project Manager for fu-Gen theatre company. That basically involves doing the run-around work of a producer - similar to a "line producer" on a film set. There's a ton of work that needs to be done, or at least delegated to outside help and other staff members. I'll have the Theatre Production Tips & Resources section up soon to help out those who need it in this area.
I've also been cast in a Toronto Fringe play called Zen and the Art of Experiencing Theatre. We've been getting great audience response and reviews. It's an ensemble cast, experimental in nature but still fun and entertaining.
Playing at the Factory Theatre Mainspace, 125 Bathhurst St. & Adelaide. Showtimes are as follows:
Fri, July 04 @ 9:30pm | show code 610
Sat, July 05 @ 11:30pm | show code 619
Mon, July 07 @ 6:30 pm | show code 631
Wed, July 09 @ 4:00pm | show code 643
Thur, July 10 @ 10:00pm | show code 655
Fri, July 11 @ 2:00pm | show code 658
Sun, July 13 @ 5:30pm | show code 676If you live in or near Toronto, I expect to see you there :)
Before I moved out here from Vancouver, I had a recurring role on DaVinci's Inquest. I played a character called "Joe Tang", a narcotics officer with questionable moral integrity. To be honest, I didn't feel I did my best work in that role - I never really got the chance to do the kind of research I needed for a character that wasn't my natural type. I just never felt very cop-like. But for those of you who are interested, and who are fans of the show, I'm in every third episode or so.
